Ad
English abbreviation for advertisement.
Ad Click
Ad click is a parameter from the advertising industry that expresses how many clicks an advertisement link on a website has received.
Ad Click Rate
Ad click rate is a tool for measuring the efficiency of advertising banners. It expresses the relationship between the number of users that have clicked a banner and the number of times a page has been accessed.
Ad Impression
(Ad View) Ad impressions measure the number of times an advertising format has been seen. It is used to determine the number of visitors who have seen an ad on a website.
Ad Server
A server which stores and manages advertisers' banners. An ad server transfers a banner to a webpage only when a user has accessed the page.
AdSense
Webmasters can use AdSense from Google to place ads on empty spaces on their websites via Google. These ads' topics match the contents of the particular page they are on.
AdWords
AdWords are search terms used for advertising purposes on Google. The search engine displays these search results as sponsored links/text-based ads.
Algorithm
Mathematical formula for calculating the ranking or list placement of a website according to a certain search. Every search engine uses its own algorithms, which means that one particular website can be ranked very differently by different search engines.
Application
Programs and software used for solving certain tasks and for creating documents, e.g. word processing or tables for making data calculations.
Application Service Provider
(ASP) Providers make applications available to customers via public networks (e.g. the internet).
Backlink
A backlink (also called inbound link) is a reference that connects another page to your page. Backlinks are often used to create linkage partnerships when optimising search engines.
Banned
Sites that have been removed from a search engine's index, in particular because they are suspected of creating spam or of contravening the search engine's terms and conditions.
Banner
A banner is an ad on a webpage. Most banners are also links to the website of the advertiser who has created the banner. One very popular banner format is the skyscraper, e.g. when the left- or right-hand side of a page is largely filled by an ad (120x600 pixels).
Bid Management
An item of software or an ASP service used for managing bids for pay-per-click ads in search engines.
Cache
Interim storage facility for online data (texts, images, etc.) that has been accessed once. If your browser ascertains that data you want to access is already present in the cache, this data is loaded directly from the cache, preventing excessive use of the internet itself.
